It's 2am and I've been spinning the vinyl. Started with MTB, "Carolina Dreams", followed by Billy Squier, "Don't Say No". Right now it's the Police, "Regatta de Blanc" (which is driving me crazy because I keep thinking it's skipping when it's not; Sting & co. are messing with my head.)
I'm all over the place tonight; next up is probably gonna be "Hysteria" (Def Leppard) or The Eagles "Greatest Hits".

some of what I've been listening to lately...with some comment...

Bruce Springsteen and the E street Band - Wrecking Ball - after repeated listenings, my opinion is this record stands with the best of BS's work. the enlisting of a young producer [Ron Aniello, who brings new textures to the table] clearly invigorated BS and the E Streeters, who turn in stirring performances throughout..."Jack of All Trades" is an instant classic. the "Seeger Sessions" strongly influence many of the songs. After so many years, records, tours, and songs, it's remarkable a veteran music artist such as BS could produce a vital, fresh, and just flat out excellent record like this one.

Beach Boys - Smile Sessions - I've heard these songs so many times on various bootlegs, there just wasn't much surprise to it all...still, great to hear these songs dolled up for the masses.

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago - interesting. different. not something I'd listen to everyday, or again, for that matter...

Chris Isaak - Beyond the Sun - if you've waited for this guy to do a bunch of oldies covers, here's your record...a good - hearted romp through some old songs...

Deer Tick - More Fuel for the Fire - in the style of Fleet Foxes, Avett Bros and the like...again interesting, but not much more...

Dr Dog - We All Belong - these guys are one of my favored new bands..they're just a lot of fun...good songs, and one can tell they're having fun making music...

Ed James - Poprocket - the name of the record describes it well...pure power pop played uptempo with a few mid tempo things to provide pacing...guitars ringing, drums up front, and a guy singing in a nasal tenor over dreamy harmonies...about as good as it gets power - pop wise...

Evanescence - ST 2011 - I love Amy Lee. She could sing the phone book, and I would swoon...that said, this record seems to all blend in together, and I'm wondering what the difference is between the first record and this one...ah, yes, songs...

Foster the People - Torches - I tried, I really did. I couldn't get halfway through it...

Galaxies - Like a Lion - this band plays first class synth - pop...much like Goldfrapp...enjoyable...but I like Goldfrapp more..

I'm starting to think I'm going to arrive at the same conclusion about "Torches" by Foster the People. I expected to like it based on the single but after several listens, it's still not catching on.

"Poprocket" sounds very interesting. I just ordered.

Over the last few days:

Dan Fogelberg/Netherlands-Been a long time since I played this one or much of anything by him. Only a few songs still grab me: Scarecrow's Dream, Dancing Shoes and the title cut is the one that still knocks me out. But he's one of those too sensitive guys with a whiny voice that gave singer songwriters a bad name.

Steve Forbert/Young Guitar Days/Now this guy's melodies stay with me and he rocks a little bit and I prefer his scratchy vocals and weird phrasing.

Four Seasons/Anthology-Let's Hang On, Opus 17, Tell It To The Rain, Working My Way Back To You, Dawn still stand out.

Emmylou Harris/Last Date & Live at The Rymon-A couple of great songs and I like her stage banter, but she never knocks me out. Tepid covers too of Guitar Town, Long may You Run, Racin In the Street.

James Hunter/The Hard Way-Just some sweet soul music

Rolling Stones/Aftermath & Between The Buttons-Since I saw a tribute to them a week ago, I've picked up some of the early albums and so far these two are the strongest. Jagger/Richards finding their writing groove.

Neil Young/On the Beach-One of my all time favorite depressing albums after opening with the bouncy Walk On

Springsteen/Wrecking Ball/Yes, I still like it. But no, it's not one of his best. Unlike those four first albums that I played over and over constantly and the words especially always hit home and got stronger and grew more revealing with repeated listens and I do like the E Street Sound much more than the Seeger sessions and i miss the real people, characters that used to populate songs. My interest wanes a few times before I get to the end of Wrecking Ball and I'm pretty sure I got everything the words had to offer after the first reading. Still like We Take Care Of Our Own, Jack Of All Trades and American Land best with We Are Alive and Wrecking Ball-it took me awhile for this song-growing on me.

Anything and everything Poco, on Spotify. I'm trying to pick my favorite album and not really coming up with a clear winner... I'm enjoying the attempt though; every Poco album has a distinct personality. Without sounding too sappy, listening to a Poco album all the way through for the first time is like making a new friend.
