SEPTEMBER 2011
It’s Sunday the 4th and we just got back from Whitefish, Montana. What an awesome weekend it was! We flew into Kalispell and took the short drive to Whitefish. Whitefish sits in the mountains overlooking the beautiful Flathead Lake. We stayed in condos at the foot of the ski slopes a short drive from downtown Whitefish. The concert was in the park and it was a perfect day for a summer concert. PPL and the Montana Band Tribute Band rounded out the afternoon concert, but the highlight was when Garry Tallent sat in with us. Garry, as you probably know, is the bass player in the E Street Band and a good friend. (Google Sunny Burgess in St. Louis to see a video of Garry and me).
Garry has a beautiful ‘spread’ just outside Whitefish and after the concert he invited all of us out to his house for B-B-Q. His place sits on thirty acres and includes stables, Gypsy wagons and trails leading down to a river. It was a real hoot watching Jack whizzing back and forth on one of Garry’s all terrain Segways. George wiped out, big surprise. We all agreed that we wished we could stay a few more days, but that’s Rock ‘n Roll I guess. It’s been such a great summer.
The concert we just played in Colorado Springs was one to remember. The concert at Cherokee Ranch on the slope of the Rockies was picture perfect. But the Castle that sits high above the ranch was a real surprise. A Scottish style castle built in the 1920’s with paintings by Rembrandt and Gauguin hanging on the walls and everywhere you looked there were antiques that would make a month of P.B.S. Antiques Road Shows. The view of Pikes Peak from our dinner table was amazing. The Castle has been a vacation stop for everyone from Winston Churchill to Princess Diana.
Michael played a couple classical pieces on the old parlor grand piano, Jack, Mary and I took in the historic tour and George slept through the whole thing back at the hotel. Then came a four course dinner featuring Fillet Mignon and poached Trout served to about a hundred guests and a half dozen musicians trying to decide which fork to use. It was a memorable day spent with many gracious people.
Next we’re playing a private corporate show at the Hilton in Virginia Beach, the Boulder Theater with PPL, and then the big weekend in MO at the beginning of Oct. We’re all looking forward to that one. Friday is the ‘Hoedown’ at Red Bluff Park, Saturday is the show in Viburnum, and then Sunday is the concert with Dave Mason and Gypsy in St. Louis. It’s a Poconut jamboree!
I’m planning on going to Nashville the second week of Oct. to finish the new C.D. Got to get it done before Christmas, it’ll be a great gift you know! Can’t wait for you to hear it and there are some exciting things coming up with the video we shot at the ‘All Fired Up’ sessions. We’ll keep you up on what’s happening with that.
Well, the weather is beautiful here. It’s time to do some work on the cabin, break out the kayaks, chase down that damn mole in the front yard, and walk the Zog.
Talk to ya’ later….
