December 2010

Brrrr…. I’m keeping the fireplace going while Mary works on getting the Christmas Poco packages on their way to you guys. With all the cold weather, I’ve had no excuse not to work on songs and Mary is a persistent task master…something I need. I’m hoping to finish three new songs for our January sessions.
Did you read George L’s post about the George Carlin memoir, Last Words? It was really cool that Poco got a mention in his book. I met George Carlin backstage at a theater in Hollywood when he was filming one of his specials. John Hartmann introduced us just before George walked out on stage. At the time I didn’t remember, but he told me he’d been to one of our Troubadour shows in the late sixties, those were pretty ‘heady’ days. We didn’t have much time to talk before a booming voice rang out in the theater, “Ladies and Gentlemen please welcome George Carlin”. We shook hands and he turned and walked through the curtains to the stage. The first thing he said after picking up the microphone was, “Have you ever noticed you never meet a Chinese guy named Rusty”?
We got a chance to see our buddies The Ozark Mountain Daredevils at Wildwood a few weeks ago. They were killer… when they did ‘Chicken Train’ and the crowd started dancing the ‘Chicken Dance’ I had to get on board! On his way back to Nashville, Supe, (Daredevils bass player), stopped by the cabin. Jack and I had just finished a session for Supe’s latest solo CD the week before. He gave me a copy of ‘It Shined’, his book about the Daredevils, and offered some really good advice about the world of publishing. One of these days…
Mary and I are staying at the cabin for Christmas this year. I’ll miss Christmas in Nashville, but there’s always next year and I’m going to be there for half of January anyway. Mary’s having a big family get-together in St. Louis with all her sisters, brother and brothers-in-law. Traditionally, it’s a serious re-gifting party where things that Good Will won’t take are passed on to other family members. Drinking is encouraged!
Oh, and if you want to know what a real ‘ROCK STAR’ does around Christmas, you have to look to Michael Webb. He’s got a one-night-stand in MOSCOW and John Fogerty’s in his back-up band! I hope he brings some really nice gifts back for those of us stuck in Missouri. Hint…hint!
