Frank Barcelona

I just read that Frank Barcelona has died. Frank was the head of Premier Talent Agency, a booking agency he created in the early seventies. Premier Talent booked Poco through much of the seventies putting us on bills with The Moody Blues, Yes, Peter Frampton, and America. Those were great times for Poco and Frank was always in our corner, a real believer in the band.
When Richie unexpectedly left Poco, Frank really showed his stuff. David Geffen wanted Poco to fold so Poco fans would follow Richie to the Souther, Hillman, Furay Band. David called Frank and threatened to pull all the Geffen acts at Premier if Frank didn’t drop Poco. Big acts like Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, the Eagles, and America. As if Richie’s departure wasn’t hard enough, now we had one of the most powerful men in the music business doing his best to destroy us.
Well, Geffen hadn’t considered there could be someone in the music business he couldn’t intimidate. Frank told Geffen something like “Go fly a kite”, or maybe it was Clint Eastwood’s line at the Republican Convention, “No, he can’t do that to himself!”
Frank stood by us. He gave us a chance. It was a rare defeat for David Geffen, who pulled his acts just as he’d threatened, and the rest is history.
So, thank you Frank Barcelona.
